5. Qwest Field, Seattle Sounders 4. Emirates Stadium, Arsenal 3. Allianz Arena, Munich 2. Cardiff Millenium Arena 1. Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid

Started thinking about the five best football stadiums I ever played at and came up with my personal “top 5″ list that I wanted to share with you.

I really like to play at stadiums where you get the feeling that the stands  “hangs over the pitch” and you have the fans very close. It is an impossible feeling to describe.

All of my “top 5″ are fantastic places, but I really wish all of you could be able to experience walking in on the pitch at a packed Bernabeu in Madrid !

I think you’ve just created inspiration for a trip to Europe in the next few years. :) Thanks & good luck this week!

  2. bmvaughn on November 2, 2009 2:30 pm

Now I have to go visit all of these?

  3. Duncan Hong on November 2, 2009 6:38 pm

How does Qwest field as a soccer pitch compared to places in Europe. Personally being from America, I know it’s one of the loudest outdoor stadium when American Football is played there on Sundays.

  4. jackfarrel on November 2, 2009 7:02 pm

I would agree with Freddie about quest only if it had a proper grass pitch. Then it would truly be a top world soccer stadium. Sadly the turf lowers its appeal a lot.

  5. Chris Howard on November 2, 2009 7:34 pm

Well, I’d have to agree with the first 3 (since I’ve been there)and can’t comment on #4 & 5 (since I haven’t), but I can suggest the Veltin’s Arena (Schalke) and Highbury for my last 2 spots.

I really love Camp Nou – Barcelona, too…

I’ve been to Qwest and Emirates… Of course my perspective has never been ON the pitch! Glad you are in Seattle Karl!

  8. viking on November 3, 2009 12:17 am

this is interesting. i have been to qwest, for both soccer and football. no doubt that is numero uno in USA and Canada. Emirates for sure, that one means so much for you too, freddie. no 3-5 i now have to visit!

Nice, but I think you’ve forgotten one…. Örjans Vall! :) You’re always welcome back, you know!

and what a game against Real Madrid in CL late winter 06. You were man of the match!

  11. AG on November 3, 2009 2:35 am

If the rumors are true, maybe you’ll run into Bernabeu in May with Arsenal in the Champions League finals. :) Many Arsenal fans really want to see you in the red jersey again!

  12. Bej on November 3, 2009 6:17 am

What about Highbury? Even thought it doesn´t exist anymore you must have a lot of good memories from there when “your” Arsenal were at it´s peak. I know I have.

  13. EverydayFan on November 3, 2009 8:21 am

    Way cool

  14. ABTsportsline on November 3, 2009 10:41 am

awesome freddie! crazy to think you’d actually list qwest in the top 5, although i think perhaps you’re being kind to your fans here? :D

Quick favor – can you bring half the Sounders with you when you go to arsenal? Perhaps some of our guys can train with arsenal’s developmental squad while you’re playing for arsenal. :)

  15. Tania from London on November 3, 2009 6:54 pm

FREDDIE ARE VERY WRONG !!!!!, Qwest Field IS NOT GOOD, NOT COMPARE THE STAGES OF EUROPE TO THE UNITED STATES. IN THE UNITED STATES NO football stadium. ALL ARE ARTIFICIAL, THE BEST IS ALL !!!!! Emirates Stadium

  16. mariaines on November 3, 2009 8:38 pm

I know you played at the Camp Nou at least once, so i don’t know why you didn’t mention that stadium! It’s one of the best, if not the best.. an european night there is unbelievable. I’m biased of course, since i’m a huge Barça fan.
I also love the Emirates, it’s all new and beautiful. Would you play there again Freddie?

  17. Viktor on November 4, 2009 2:05 am

I loved highbury it were amazing, emirates is beutiful and Bernabeu is mighty.

If I ever goes to USA, I hope to go see a MLS match!

Thanks for all the moments you have gave us Fredrik!

  18. Anthony Gunder on November 4, 2009 1:42 pm

Qwest in the Top 5? Surely you flatter us Sounders fans Freddie!

  19. Kyle Watson on November 5, 2009 11:01 pm

Freddie how about 2001 champions league game vs Panathinaikos at Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in Athens. Old, loud stadium which only holds 17,000 but man is it nuts. I was sitting first row behind a rarely disheveled Arsen Wenger and a very upset Thiery Henry. That was an exciting game for the home team – frustrating for you though. Houston played like Panathinaikos – much grabbing and tackling. Good luck on Sunday

  20. Susemm on November 6, 2009 5:26 am

Emirates for sure:-). I miss Highbury a bit though, as you came very close to the pitch there. Will you be coming back to The Gunners anytime soon…?:-) B rgds Susanne

  21. SeattleStan on November 10, 2009 6:50 pm

Allianz is amazing, just seeing that place gives me chills and reminds me how awesome the World Cup matches were that I saw there.

  22. Hatice Halıcı on November 12, 2009 12:23 pm

The best stadium is BESIKTAS INONU in Istanbul-TURKEY!!!

  23. Ken Yam on November 27, 2009 9:48 am

Can you comment on this in your next article? Toronto FC recently announced that they will be spending about $3.5 million on a new grass pitch to be ready by 2010. BMO Field currently has an over-used Fieldturf.

    http://www.insidetoronto.com/sports/article/91866–the-grass-is-greener-when-it-s-real

It is the most any MLS team has spent on a pitch, and they claim that the pitch would be as good as some of the best pitches in the English Premiership.

It includes a world class drainage and irrigation system. It will be kept domed in the winter with full irrigation and artificle UV technology to keep it “summer-like” all year round.

Do you think this is a positive step for MLS? With the Toronto FC organization taking the lead, do you think this will pressure other MLS clubs to make similar investments (including the Sounders)?

  24. Donald Bramlett on January 13, 2010 11:20 pm

Freddie, you know for a fact you are taking the piss by including Qwest Field in this list.

  25. Anton Zakó on January 24, 2010 2:14 pm

Where is Old trafford then ?

  26. Fr3ddysMum on March 1, 2010 9:49 am

Speaking as a steward at the Emirates, I will of course have to say that ours is the best ground in the world. It certainly has the best pitch, which from the upper stands looks like an immaculately ironed tartan blanket. May I just say as well how disappointed I was to hear that you left the Arsenal weeks after I had named my first born son after you! I hope that you will make it up to me by coming to apologise in person the next time you are visiting the stadium. I’m on Block 111 Upper Tier, and would love to show you pictures of the 2nd best looking Freddy in the world. xxxx

@TheRealFreddie När du går i pension, se mig för att vara din arkitekt :) Lycka till på fotboll säsongen.

No wonder why you didn’t pick any Greek stadiums! I am somehow inspired to visit Allianz and Cardiff (Seattle is a bit too far).

  32. Matthew Bonnici on May 15, 2010 10:31 am

Come back to the emirates any time mate!

    You’re an absolute legend
