NEW YORK — MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced the 2009 Best XI during his annual State of the League address. The Best XI recognizes the League’s top 11 players at each position on the field – one goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards. Six members of the 2009 Best XI are prior recipients of the honor, while five have been named to the squad for the first time. The Best XI members received the most votes from the media, MLS players and MLS coaches and general managers.

MIDFIELDER – FREDDIE LJUNGBERG (Seattle Sounders FC)
DOB – April 16, 1977
Citizenship – Sweden

The Swedish superstar made a remarkable recovery from off-season hip surgery while making a smooth transition from the English Premier League to Major League Soccer. Ljungberg, who became Seattle’s first Designated Player prior to the 2009 season, led a dynamic offense with a team high nine assists. His vision and creativity helped spark the Sounders run to the playoffs – only the third expansion team in MLS history to qualify. Ljungberg was named an MLS All-Star in his first season, was MLS Player of the Month for October and was a finalist for the MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

    Inspiration!!!!!
My son who is 16 and has just signed Pro-Youth for a Scottish Football team, recently had a migraine attack during a game. He was diagnosed as being affected by this condition at 14 years of age and although he has had a couple of attacks when playing, this was by far the worst. During his recovery phase, he talked about never playing football again but then he trawled the internet and came across an article from the Telegraph about how you were affected and managed this condition. He is now inspired to play again, once he has fully recovered.
Thanks for being so honest about your experiences.

    Freddie:

Wow, great first season for Seattle and, with you in the midfield, I’m sure the future will be increasing achievement. The style and form of Sounder football is so fantastic to watch – fast, aggressive, on the ground, based on quality touch and perfect form. Your are the perfect person to run the midfield for Seattle. Best wishes for continued good health and success. I’m from Portland, I can’t wait to see you and the Sounders down here a few times each season starting in 2011!

  29. bsharilb on January 12, 2010 4:02 am

    Oh wow. Congrats Freddie!

  30. Tia Holmes on March 8, 2010 12:51 am

    Congratulations!
I can’t even describe how lucky we are to have you in Seattle! We are truly blessed and I absolutely “love” watching you play! You make Seattle better just by being on the field… Please stay in Seattle, Seattle is your home too now! We Love you!
Personal note: My Dad got very sick during the season last year and the only thing he would stay awake to watch is that #10 on the Sounders! He became a Freddie Ljungberg fan too!
“We miss him” and it was so wonderful to see his bright blue eyes enjoying watching you play!
I can’t wait until the season begins!!!
    Thanks Freddie!
