In America we know that specific issue as a "Reserve Clause" - Major League Baseball rejected it about 35 years ago. One of the problems the public has with the current CBA issues is that the players aren't separating the Reserve Clause from free agency - these are actually two separate issues. Reserve Clause is as you describe, but Free Agency would be like making different McDonald's stores bid against each other for your services. If the players concentrated only on the Reserve Clause, making them free to move to other leagues when their MLS contracts expire, I think almost all fans would be with you, and you would be more likely to get it.
